The Cost of Employment
Jun 03, 2025
I thought I was making money in my job… until I realized every hour I clocked in was actually costing me $150.
I was working at the premier sports medicine facility in my town, a job I’m still grateful for, when I had this epiphany…
Every time I walked through those clinic doors… I was leaving $150/hour on the table.
Now, technically, I was “making money.” I was getting paid $50/hour.
But when I stepped back and looked at what I could’ve been making… $200/hour seeing private clients on my own, that job suddenly looked a lot less profitable.
No rent to pay, no patients to find, no sales calls… sure.
But I was also giving up control, flexibility, and the ability to scale.
So even if I only worked 2 hours on my own…
I could basically match what I was making in an entire 10-hour clinic day.
That changed everything.
Because the biggest thing holding me back?
Wasn’t knowledge. Wasn’t skills.
It was the illusion of security… and my fear of leaving it.
I talk to rehab pros every week who feel this same tension.
They’re afraid to leave the clinic, afraid to take a step on their own.
But when you zoom out, the bigger risk is staying.
So here’s what helped me move forward:
I stopped asking, “What’s the risk if I leave?”
And started asking, “What’s the opportunity if I do?”
Same situation. Different frame. Entirely different future.
If you’ve been thinking about leaving… or building your own thing on the side…
Just know this…
You don’t need to feel 100% ready. (it’s rare anyone does)
You need to believe that what’s ahead of you is worth the effort…
Because it is.
And if you’re struggling to take the leap, I get it. I’ve been there.
Just don’t forget, your potential doesn’t live inside someone else’s schedule.
Sometimes all it takes is a different lens…
To realize you’re not behind, you’re just one belief away.
