DIY Mentality is Keeping You STUCK
May 27, 2025
I used to be big into the do-it-yourself (DIY) mentality.
Not just with house projects… although I still like some of those.
(Water or electric? I’m calling a pro. I’m not out here trying to rewire the house.)
But when it came to my first business, my cash practice, I wanted to do it all myself. I let my ego take over, and I'll tell you what… it cost me…
I made a lot of mistakes early on in my journey.
Pricing my services WAY too low... The way I structured my evaluations…
Not selling packages…
Probably more that I’ve blocked out…
But those are the ones that stick with me.
Over time, and especially as I’ve helped more providers build businesses of their own, I still see this pattern come up:
“Let me just figure it out myself first.”
Some do.
Some don’t… and then they show up in a panic..
They hit what I call “expected roadblocks”, see it as failure… and end up right back at square one… safety.
But you won’t get there with lessons from failure.
It’s part of the process. It’s the feedback you need to evolve.
And the biggest cost of the DIY route isn’t just mistakes…
It’s tunnel vision.
Sometimes, the thing you need most isn’t more effort… It’s an unbiased opinion to give you a bird’s eye view…
“Hey… have you considered looking at it this way?”
I know you’ve seen this before with your clients. They come in for one visit, they see you for a movement screen, or at a workshop, and say things like:
“Cool, I’ll just take the info and try things out for a while."
And you know that’s not enough. So you push back a bit…
Isn’t it funny how we do that for them… but then turn around and say the same thing about our own growth?
You might think the DIY route saves you money… but in the long run, does it actually cost you?
Because the ROI on momentum is way higher than anything I could’ve “figured out eventually.”
If this hits and you’ve been in a DIY season, maybe it’s time for a new approach.
